Press Release on
Inauguration of travelling exhibition 'Measuring Our Planet'
It may seem surprising but true that we know more about outer space than the
planet beneath our feet. Efforts are still on to know more about our mother planet making
use of latest developments in science & technology. The Earth is in danger and we all
are looking for solutions to phenomenon like global warming, ozone depletion, greenhouse
effect, climate change etc. We can contribute to protect & preserve our earth, in a
better way, if we know the causes & consequences of various phenomenon &
activities on Earth. For this we need to measure the damage already done to our
environment. How to measure various features of the Earth?
The traveling exhibition titled Measuring Our Planet, inaugurated at Nehru Science
Centre in Worli, will describe the methods & science to measure various features of
the Earth. The exhibition helps to understand the planet features and their usefulness in
a much lucid manner.
Designed and developed by National Council of
Science Museums during International Year of Planet Earth, the exhibition has 25 exhibits
related to measurement of earths features like shape, size, mass & weight,
speed, structure, rotation & revolution, temperature, its age as well as techniques to
estimate the same, wind speed, movement of its plates etc. The traveling exhibition
portrays the human endeavours for measuring these features, their significance and
usefulness.
Some of the interesting interactive exhibits
include your address on earth, how to establish that earth is round (a question answered
by Aristotle). Visitors can understand how Eratosthenes, a Greek Mathematician, estimated
the diameter of earth in 3rd century BC. They can also know how many people
like us will be required to encircle the earth. Visitors can have idea about earthquake
and its intensity through simulation as well as measure interactively the depth of sea,
earths magnetic field etc.
The exhibition through interactive exhibits,
computer kiosks and information panels provide information on measuring environmental
parameters of Earth that are important in our daily life like temperature, atmospheric
pressure, sunshine, etc. A visitor can interact and measure the temperature of a heat
source, pressure & humidity, speed of air etc. The causes & consequences of
climate change are also shown through audio-visual presentation.
In a nutshell, the exhibition guides
visitors through a short but captivating journey to assess the planet Earth through
measurement of its salient features. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. (Mrs) Archana
Bhattacharya, Director, Indian Institute of Geo-Magnetism, Mumbai. The exhibition will
remain open for public up to 20th February 2010. The centre remains open for
public on all days from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm.
So block your calendars now and learn about methods & science
to measure various features of the Mother Earth! |
